Happy Clam Tailgate Torsion Bar Replacement

For 1971-1976 GM B-Body Station Wagons

The Happy Clam spring is a drop-in replacement for the OEM torsion bar used in GM Glide-Away tailgates. As the OEM torsion bar is not reproduced and NOS parts are rare, this is the next best option to improve the operation of your “clamshell” tailgate.

Installation is extremely simple, and requires absolutely no modification to the car. Simply remove the factory torsion bar, bolt in the Happy Clam, and you’re good to go!

The GM Glide-away tailgate uses a torsion bar to aid in lifting the tailgate. This makes it possible for a person to lift the tailgate on cars with a non-powered tailgate, but it is also necessary to reduce strain on the motor for the powered tailgate. However, the original torsion bars are prone to breaking, and unfortunately they are not reproduced, and NOS parts are very rare.

To solve those problems and breathe new life into your old wagon, we have developed the Happy Clam! The Happy Clam is a simple, bolt in replacement for the torsion bar that requires no modification to your car! It provides enough spring force to counter-balance the weight of the tailgate, allowing for smooth, effortless operation on powered and non-powered models!
